3.C. DIE SACHE SELBST: ACTION, LAW, AND ANTIGONE ON THE MORAL “INSOLENCE” OF REASON

Now, at last, we come to the “real issue.” How do universality and particularity, concept and substance, thought and being intercalate (durchdringen) one another in the individual? How is it that, far from being opposed, universality and particularity belong together (zusammenhangen) in the individual? How is it that the concept is only realized (verwirklicht) in the substance of the individual? How do these distinctions come to be revealed as moments of the unity of individuality?

At the beginning of his analysis of self-consciousness in the shape of reason, Hegel declares that “reason is the certainty of consciousness that it is all reality” (¶233). This certainty, however, has not yet attained the status of truth. Reason demonstrates himself to be all reality through his action; however, reason does not yet comprehend himself as such. The consciousness of reason continues to be afflicted by the difference between what is in-itself, or being, and what is for-another, or known. This distinction fractures both his experience of the perceptual world and his ethical life, or his relation to himself and to the world of others.
